SUMMARY STATUS: Planning phase
Grannus has been working to commercialize its polygeneration "Eureaka Process" since 2013, when it was a runner-up for Sustainability at the Cleantech Open. In 2015, the company closed its Series A financing, to fund engineering and feasibility work on its commercial-scale demonstration plant in California. In early 2016, Grannus awarded the engineering design contract but, in late 2016, gave the contracts to other companies, and now appears to be moving quickly to commercialize its modular, regional-scale ammonia plant design.

Fortigen is building a small ammonia plant outside Geneva, NE, to supply fertilizer to local farmers. The project's small scale keeps emissions under most environmental thresholds, streamlining the permit process. The project broke ground in March 2016, for an anticipated start-up by Fall 2017.

SUMMARY STATUS: Execution phase
Pallas Nitrogen intends to reassemble an old ammonia loop, built in the late 1970s and last operated in 2004. The original plant was designed to use byproduct hydrogen feedstock, and it will be restarted at an Air Products facility, using pipeline hydrogen. Delayed from its initial schedule, the project now anticipates start-up in 2017.

In July 2015, the Louisiana governor's office announced that Lithuanian investors intended to build an ammonia plant in Pollock, by retrofitting an idled biodiesel plant. The air permit was issued in December 2016, disclosing project details. Construction was going to begin in 2017 for start-up in 2019 but, in April 2017, the project was "put on hold indefinitely."

Midwest BioEnergy is planning a series of small waste-to-ammonia plants at municipal and industrial sites in the heart of the ammonia fertilizer market. The Monmouth plant will be the "proof of concept." Some equity in place; debt financing secured, contingent upon equity investment.

In May 2015, Agrifos and Borealis announced their agreement to develop a "world-scale" ammonia plant, for start-up in "early 2019." The location was not announced, but will be on the Gulf Coast, Texas. The plant will use hydrogen feedstock. Borealis intends to have a significant equity stake and a long-term off-take contract for 40% of the ammonia.

Project redesigned in 2016, now awaiting EPC announcement and revised budget and schedule. Announced in May 2014, this greenfield had been in development since October 2012, with its water permit approved in August 2015, and air permit approved in April 2015. AM Agrigen had publicly announced almost no details, but permit documents detailed scale and technology licensors. Since then, the project has completely changed.

Simplot began building its new ammonia plant in October 2014, adjacent to its existing phosphate fertilizer plant. The project was scheduled to be complete in Q3 2016, but delays pushed expected start-up into mid-2017. The investment is "one of the largest in company history," and will make Simplot self-sufficient for ammonia.

Kemper County Energy Facility, a 582 MW power plant, is one of the US DOE's flagship "clean coal" projects. It will produce ammonia as a byproduct of its coal-to-syngas process. The plant has been producing power from natural gas since August 2014, but has experienced profound delays and budget overruns. It isn't operational yet but it will cost over $7 billion.

OCI Partners restarted the Beaumont methanol-ammonia plant at the end of 2011, and completed a debottlenecking project in 2015 with minor delays and cost over-runs. Since then, the ammonia plant has been producing at record levels, with output slightly more than 100% capacity in 2016. In December 2016, Dutch majority owner OCI NV launched an all-stock buyout offer to acquire the remaining ~20% of OCI Partners, but this was shelved in April 2017 and the offer terminated.

Built in 1992, the Saskferco project was, until 2016, the newest world-scale, natural gas-based ammonia plant in North America. It was purchased by Yara in 2008, and expanded in 2008-9. Yara considered building a new brownfield ammonia-urea plant but, in 2013, cancelled those plans because costs grew too high and it had concerns about overcapacity.

SUMMARY STATUS: Construction phase
Construction on the new urea plant began in Summer 2014, for an expected start-up in mid-2017. In 2016, however, destructive storms flattened the new urea storage building, which had to be demolished and the foundations ripped out before construction could restart. Start-up is now expected in 2018. Granular urea will be the 11th product made at the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, and the 12th will be DEF.

SUMMARY STATUS:
The Courtright plant has been producing ammonia since 1966, with a second plant commissioned in 1985. Originally built by ICI, later acquired by Terra, it is now owned by CF Industries. An expansion of the urea plant is currently under construction.
