RESEARCH NOTES:
Through late 2013, Geneva Nitrogen considered building a 200 short ton per day ammonia plant at their explosives manufacturing plant in Vineyard, Utah. After preliminary studies, the idea was shelved. The site continues to purchase ammonia for upgrading to ammonium nitrate (prill and solutions).
Ammonium nitrate production began at this site in the late 1950s, first owned by US Steel and later by Geneva Steel. LaRoche Industries purchased the AN plant in 1986, and sold it in 2000 to Geneva Nitrogen, which was at that time a 50:50 joint venture between Orica and Dyno Nobel. After Dyno Nobel purchased the nitrogen business of El Paso Corp, in 2003, the US Department of Justice ordered the company to sell its stake in Geneva Nitrogen, which was purchased by Austin Powder Co.
Another Austin Powder subsidiary, US Nitrogen, built an ammonia plant of identical scale and purpose down in Greeneville, Tennessee.[/memberful]
